Mirza Ghalib Ki Haveli

Amidst the busy streets of Ballimaran, renowned for its shoe and eyeglasses industry, take a break and relax in the charming Haveli that was once home to India’s best poet, Mirza Asadullah Khan, also known as Mirza Ghalib. The best Urdu poetry was written in Mirza Ghalib Haveli, one of many old havelis in Delhi’s old city. Other than that, nothing in Mirza Ghalib Haveli stands out at first glance. Before passing away in 1869, Mirza Ghalib is said to have spent his last days in the Haveli.

The physician who owned the haveli was a diehard follower of the legend. The haveli has seen many occupants since Mirza Ghalib and the haveli’s owner passed away. Currently a neglected museum honoring Mirza Ghalib in Delhi, the residence has hosted the composition of many well-known poems.

In the captivating city of Agra, in the year 1797, Mirza Ghalib was born to Mirza Abdullah Beg. When Ghalib was only five years old, his father passed away. When Ghalib was thirteen, he got married to Umrao Begum. He then moved from Agra to Delhi, where he lived until his death in 1869. Ghalib was present throughout the political transition from the Mughal to the British eras, and his poetry masterfully captured this moment. Until now, Ghalib has gained international recognition and has played a significant role in promoting Shayari and Urdu poetry. Even if Ghalib’s actual existence is no longer present, his literary creations, preserved in books, are among the best-selling novels worldwide.

History

It is thought that Mirza Ghalib spent a considerable amount of time residing in this haveli following his return from Agra. He composed several of his Persian and Urdu “diwans” in this location. Following Ghalib’s passing, the haveli was home to a number of stores until the government took possession of it in 1999. After that, it underwent renovations and became a memorial museum.

Despite being open all year round, winter is the ideal time to come because Delhi’s summers may be extremely hot.

Key Information

Timings: The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Monday, however, it is closed.

HOW TO REACH

Ghalib ki Haveli’s closest metro stations are Chawri Bazaar and Chandni Chowk, both of which are on the yellow line. It just takes about ten minutes to walk from any metro station to the monument amid Ballimaran’s alleyways.
